Hole of Horcum
A vast natural amphitheatre in the moors, said to have been scooped out by the giant Wade.
Waterfall, riverside gorge, a tiny pub and an easy return along an old railway.

Take the path beside the Mallyan Spout Hotel down to the West Beck and turn left for the waterfall, a short scramble over boulders. Return past the junction and follow the beck downstream through the wooded gorge to Beck Hole, where the Birch Hall Inn serves beer through a hatch.
Come back to Goathland on the Rail Trail, the trackbed of the 1836 horse-drawn railway, which climbs gently through the incline where carriages were once hauled by rope.
