Take the path beside the Mallyan Spout Hotel down to the West Beck and turn left for the waterfall, a short scramble over boulders. Return past the junction and follow the beck downstream through the wooded gorge to Beck Hole, where the Birch Hall Inn serves beer through a hatch.

Come back to Goathland on the Rail Trail, the trackbed of the 1836 horse-drawn railway, which climbs gently through the incline where carriages were once hauled by rope.

  • Rocks by the waterfall are slippery
  • Riverside path has some steps and muddy sections
  • The Birch Hall Inn has limited opening; check before relying on it
