Wheeldale Roman Road
A mile of ancient paved trackway across the moor, long thought Roman, now a pleasing mystery.
Wheeldale Moor carries a mile-long stretch of stone causeway known for two centuries as Wade's Causeway or the Roman road. Recent archaeology suggests it may be older, a prehistoric boundary or trackway, but nobody is sure and it remains one of the most evocative ancient monuments on the moors. Reach it from the road between Goathland and Egton Bridge, or walk up from Goathland past Wheeldale Lodge.
