Roseberry Topping

Roseberry Topping is only 320 metres high but its half-collapsed summit cone stands alone above the Cleveland plain, so the views take in Teesside, the Pennines and the whole northern escarpment of the moors. The odd shape is the result of a collapse in 1912, caused by a geological fault and probably made worse by mining below the summit.

The climb from the pay-and-display car park at Newton-under-Roseberry (run by the National Park, so National Trust members also pay) takes about 40 minutes. It is steep but short, and there are gentler paths through Newton Wood. Bluebells in May, heather in August.
