Hole of Horcum

A vast natural amphitheatre in the moors, said to have been scooped out by the giant Wade.

The Hole of Horcum is a great bowl 120 metres deep and half a mile across, carved by springs undercutting the hillside. Legend prefers the story that the giant Wade scooped up a handful of earth to throw at his wife and dropped it to form Blakey Topping.

The viewpoint from the car park on the A169 at Saltergate is spectacular in itself. The circular walk around the rim and down through the Hole to Levisham takes half a day, and the Levisham station stop on the NYMR is at the bottom of the valley.
