Mulgrave Woods belong to the Mulgrave Estate and are opened to walkers on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. From the gate beside the Sandsend beck a network of grassy rides climbs through mixed woodland along two steep-sided valleys, past waterfalls and rhododendrons, to the ruins of Old Mulgrave Castle, a 13th-century fortress slighted after the Civil War and now perched romantically on a ridge between the two becks.
It is a lovely, quiet walk of two to three hours there and back, with bluebells in spring and good autumn colour. Dogs are welcome on leads. The woods are closed throughout May for pheasant rearing and on the days not listed.

Enter from Sandsend village, on the coast road two miles north of Whitby; park in the village or the East Row car park.
