The Wainstones are a jumble of sandstone pinnacles and boulders on the western nose of Hasty Bank, the largest rock outcrop on the North York Moors and a favourite of walkers and climbers. The Cleveland Way and the Coast to Coast thread between the rocks, and some of the stones carry Bronze Age cup marks. The view west along the switchback of the Cleveland Hills to Roseberry Topping and the Pennines is one of the great sights of the park.

The shortest walk is from the Clay Bank car park on the B1257: a steep climb up the flagged path onto Hasty Bank, then west along the top to the crags, about a mile and a half each way. The Broughton Bank car park, on the same road, gives a slightly longer approach. Combine with Cringle Moor and Lordstones for a classic ridge walk.
