Lilla Cross

Lilla Cross stands on Lilla Howe, a Bronze Age burial mound on the high moor south of Goathland, and commemorates Lilla, a thane who threw himself in front of an assassin's dagger to save King Edwin of Northumbria. The cross is thought to date from the 10th century. It was moved for safety in 1952, when the moor became a military training area, and later returned to its original place. The walk in from the A171 at Jugger Howe is over open moor with the sea in view.
