Lilla Cross
The oldest Christian monument on the moors, marking where a thane died saving King Edwin in 626.
Lilla Cross stands on Lilla Howe, a Bronze Age burial mound on the high moor south of Goathland, and commemorates Lilla, a thane who threw himself in front of an assassin's dagger to save King Edwin of Northumbria. It has stood here since around 1000 and is the meeting point of ancient tracks across Fylingdales Moor. The walk in from the A171 at Jugger Howe is over open moor with the sea in view.
