Eden Camp Modern History Museum

Eden Camp was built in 1942 to house Italian and later German prisoners of war, and its 30-odd huts have been turned into one of the most atmospheric museums in the north. Each hut tells a different part of the story of the war years: the Blitz, the Home Front, rationing, the Blackout, a U-boat, the Home Guard, evacuees and the fall of Berlin, with sound, smell and reconstructed streets rather than glass cases.

It is a full day for families, with a music hall, a children's assault course, a NAAFI-style café and outdoor displays of tanks and aircraft. Allow at least three to four hours.

Just north of Malton on the A64/A169 junction, postcode YO17 6RT, with free parking. Ten minutes from Pickering on the way to the moors.
