The Esk Valley line is an ordinary National Rail service and an extraordinary journey, following the Esk valley down to the sea and stopping at Great Ayton, Battersby, Kildale, Commondale, Castleton Moor, Danby, Lealholm, Glaisdale, Egton, Grosmont, Sleights and Ruswarp before Whitby. Five or six trains a day each way from Monday to Saturday and four on Sundays. Use it to walk from one village to the next and ride back, or to link with the steam railway at Grosmont.
