Castle Howard

One of the grandest houses in England, in 1,000 acres of parkland fifteen minutes from the moors.

Castle Howard is outside the National Park in the Howardian Hills but too close and too magnificent to leave out. Vanbrugh's baroque palace of 1699 has a great dome, painted ceilings, a long gallery and a chapel, and the grounds have lakes, temples, a mausoleum, an adventure playground and a walled garden. Famous as Brideshead in both screen versions of Brideshead Revisited. Allow most of a day.
