The Yorkshire Arboretum, run by the Castle Howard Arboretum Trust, is a rolling landscape of some 6,000 trees planted since 1979 alongside the drive to Castle Howard. There are lakes, meadows, walks of different lengths, a children's trail and a visitor centre with a café, and the collection is at its best in spring blossom and autumn colour. It is much quieter than the big house next door, dogs are welcome on leads, and the wide views take in the Howardian Hills.

Off the Castle Howard approach road near Coneysthorpe, York YO60 7BY, about 15 miles from Helmsley. Free parking.
