Byland Abbey

Byland was the third of the great Yorkshire Cistercian houses and its church, finished around 1195, was 100 metres long. The west front still stands with the lower half of an enormous rose window that inspired the one at York Minster. The 13th-century mosaic floor tiles, still in place in parts of the church, are among the best surviving in England; they are covered over in winter to protect them. Quieter than Rievaulx and Fountains and a good pairing with the Kilburn White Horse.
