Bransdale

The quietest dale on the moors, a National Trust estate with a restored watermill and a road that loops nowhere.

Bransdale is the dale nobody visits: a single road in from Kirkbymoorside that circles the dale head and comes back, a handful of farms, a lonely church and Bransdale Mill, an 1811 watermill restored by the National Trust with Latin and Greek inscriptions carved by the miller's son. Curlews, red grouse, silence, and heather on the ridges either side. Walk the dale road or the moor tops above.
