Rievaulx Abbey
One of the most complete and beautiful Cistercian abbeys in England, in a wooded valley near Helmsley.
The first stage of the Cleveland Way: woods and meadows from the town to the most beautiful abbey in the north.

Follow the Cleveland Way signs from the car park past the castle and along the edge of Duncombe Park, through Whinny Bank Wood and down to Rievaulx Bridge. The abbey is a short walk up the lane. Allow time to look round, and consider the climb up to Rievaulx Terrace for the view from above.
Return the same way, or on a summer weekend check whether the Moorsbus is running back to Helmsley.
