Whitby West Cliff and the whalebone arch

The West Cliff was Whitby's Victorian resort development, laid out by the railway king George Hudson with crescents, hotels and a promenade. The whalebone arch commemorates the whaling fleet, Captain Cook's statue looks out over the harbour where he learned his trade and where his ships were built, and the view across to the abbey on the East Cliff is the postcard. Bram Stoker stayed here, and the bench where he sat is marked. The Khyber Pass road and the steps lead down to the beach and the piers. The cliff lift has been closed since 2022.
