Whitby West Cliff and the whalebone arch

The West Cliff was Whitby's Victorian resort development, laid out by the railway king George Hudson with crescents, hotels and a promenade. The whalebone arch commemorates the whaling fleet, Captain Cook's statue looks out over the harbour he sailed from, and the view across to the abbey on the East Cliff is the postcard. Bram Stoker stayed here, and the bench where he sat is marked. The Khyber Pass road and the cliff lift lead down to the beach and the piers.
