Whitby RNLI Lifeboat Museum

Whitby has had a lifeboat since 1802 and its crews have won more gallantry medals than almost any other station. The museum in the old lifeboat house on Pier Road, renovated in 2022, tells that story through the 1919 pulling lifeboat Robert and Ellen Robson, models, medals and photographs, and the harrowing account of the 1861 disaster when twelve of the thirteen crew were lost.

The modern all-weather lifeboat is berthed a few yards away in the harbour and can often be seen from the quay. Children can try the interactive displays and there is a shop supporting the RNLI.

At the seaward end of Pier Road on the west side of the harbour, YO21 3PU, a short walk from the swing bridge.
