Robin Hood's Bay beach and fossils

At low water the bay empties to reveal a series of curved rocky ridges that are among the best fossil grounds in England. Ammonites, belemnites and occasionally reptile bones turn up in the shale. Look on the beach and among loose rocks rather than hammering the cliffs, which are protected and unstable.

Check the tide times before you go. The bay is cut off at high tide and the walk south to Boggle Hole is only possible on a falling tide.
