Mathewsons have sold classic cars from their Thornton-le-Dale garage for decades, and since the Yesterday channel's Bangers and Cash the village has become a place of pilgrimage for enthusiasts. Visitors can call into the shop beside the original showroom, look at the cars for sale and, on the right day, meet the family. A small museum of vehicles from Derek Mathewson's own collection has reopened in the village.
Auctions themselves are now held at Mathewsons' larger site in the nearby countryside and can be visited on viewing days. Note that under-16s are not allowed inside the showrooms. Thornton-le-Dale, with its beck, stocks and thatched cottage, is a pleasant place to wander afterwards.
