Fortune's Kippers
Whitby kippers smoked over oak in the same Henrietta Street smokehouse since 1872.
Fortune's has smoked herring in the blackened sheds at the end of Henrietta Street for five generations. You buy your kippers wrapped in newspaper at the door, and the smell from the smokehouse fills the street below the abbey. One of the great food experiences of the Yorkshire coast and unchanged in a century.
