Forge Valley is a National Nature Reserve on the eastern edge of the park where the Derwent cuts through ancient oak, ash and alder woodland. A boardwalk runs along the river, and the feeding stations by the road have made the nuthatches, tits and even great spotted woodpeckers so tame that they will take seed from an outstretched palm. Fine at any season and good with children.
