Saltburn was built in the 1860s as a planned resort and keeps its pier, its water-balanced cliff tramway and its Italian gardens. It is outside the National Park but marks the point where the Cleveland Way reaches the sea, and the walk south along the cliffs to Skinningrove and Staithes is one of the finest sections. Good surf, a Victorian tea room on the pier and the Esk Valley line is a bus ride away at Middlesbrough.
