Scarborough Castle

Scarborough Castle crowns the headland that divides North and South Bay, a site fortified since the Bronze Age and occupied by a Roman signal station, a Viking chieftain and the Norman kings, who built the massive 12th-century keep. It survived sieges in the Civil War and a bombardment by German warships in 1914. The walk round the curtain walls gives the best view on the Yorkshire coast, south towards Filey Brigg and north towards the moors.

There is an exhibition in the Master Gunner's House, a café and plenty of grass for children to run about. The Rotunda Museum and the harbour are a short walk below.

Castle Road, Scarborough YO11 1HY, above the old town. No parking at the castle; use town car parks. Managed by English Heritage.
