The National Trust's small visitor centre in Ravenscar is the place to get your bearings for one of the wildest bits of the Yorkshire coast. Staff can point you to the grey seal colony on the rocks below the headland, the old alum works and brickworks on the Cinder Track, and the best route down to the shore. There is a shop, maps and local information, and the trust runs seal walks and events through the season.
Ravenscar itself is the town that never was: a Victorian resort laid out with roads and drains that never attracted buyers. The Cleveland Way south to Robin Hood's Bay from here is about four miles with the whole bay in view.
