Walk through George Stephenson's 1835 tunnel beside Grosmont station, one of the oldest railway tunnels in the world, and you arrive at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway's engine sheds. Locomotives are coaled, watered and overhauled in front of you, there is a viewing gallery, and on quiet days the volunteers are happy to talk. Free to enter; the best place on the line to get close to the engines.
