  • Ride the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering to Goathland and see the Harry Potter station
  • Rock pool and fossil hunt at Robin Hood's Bay or Runswick Bay on a falling tide
  • Dalby Forest: play trails, easy cycle routes and the Go Ape treetop course
  • Ryedale Folk Museum at Hutton-le-Hole, with dressing up, old shops and free-range chickens
  • The Moors Centre at Danby: adventure playground, river paddling and a wildlife garden, all free
  • Climb Roseberry Topping, a mountain in miniature that takes forty minutes
  • The 199 steps in Whitby, counted, then fish and chips on the pier
  • Feed wild birds from your hand at Forge Valley Woods
  • Falling Foss and the tea garden by the waterfall
  • Flamingo Land theme park and zoo near Pickering for a full-on day

Wet weather: the railway, Ryedale Folk Museum, Whitby Museum and the Dracula Experience. Ice cream: Beacon Farm at Sneaton, and the greens at Great Ayton and Hutton-le-Hole.
