Victorian resort with a pier, cliff tramway, Italian gardens and surf. Where the Cleveland Way first reaches the sea.

Skinningrove

Former ironstone village on a wild beach with a jetty and the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum.

Staithes

The prettiest harbour on the coast, Captain Cook's first job and the Staithes Group of painters. Park at the top and walk down.

Port Mulgrave

An abandoned ironstone harbour below the cliffs, reached by a steep path, famous for fossils.

Runswick Bay

A crescent of sand beneath a cliff-side village. The best family beach on this stretch.

Kettleness and Sandsend

Alum quarries, a headland with an old railway tunnel, then three miles of sand into Whitby.

Whitby

Abbey, harbour, Dracula, fish and chips. The town everyone knows.

Saltwick Bay

Sea stacks, a shipwreck and fossils a mile south of the abbey.

Robin Hood's Bay

Smugglers' alleys tumbling to a fossil beach. End of the Coast to Coast.

Boggle Hole and Ravenscar

A cove with a hostel in a mill, then the town that never was, with seals on the rocks below.
