Eighteen miles from Pickering north through Newton Dale to Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont, where the NYMR joins the Esk Valley line and most trains continue six miles to Whitby. The full journey takes about an hour and three quarters each way.

A day rover lets you get on and off all day, which is by far the best way to use the line. Single and return fares are available for those who just want the ride. Book online in advance for gala weekends, Santa Specials and school holidays.
Where to get off
- Levisham for the Hole of Horcum, Skelton Tower and Newton Dale
- Goathland for Mallyan Spout, Beck Hole and the Harry Potter station
- Grosmont for the engine sheds and the Rail Trail walk back to Goathland
- Whitby for the abbey, harbour and fish and chips
Tips
Sit on the left heading north for the best views of Newton Dale. Pullman dining trains run on selected days and need booking. The line runs most days from late March to early November plus winter specials; check the timetable as some days are diesel-hauled.
