Every half term

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Ryedale Folk Museum, Dalby Forest and the Moors Centre at Danby run holiday activities. Flamingo Land and Go Ape are open from spring to autumn. Rock pooling at Runswick Bay and Robin Hood's Bay works in any weather short of a gale.

February

Dark Skies Festival stargazing events, snowdrops at the abbeys, empty beaches and cheap cottages. Whitby Steampunk Weekend.

May and Whitsun

Bluebells under Roseberry Topping, lambs in the fields, Whitby Fish and Ships, the first beach days.

October

The best of the lot: autumn colour in the dales, the Autumn Steam Gala, Railway in Wartime, the abbey illuminations at Whitby and Goth Weekend over Halloween. Fossils turn up after the first autumn storms.

  • The family weekend and ten-things-with-children guides have the day-by-day detail
  • Book the railway and Go Ape ahead in every holiday
