The Esk Valley line runs from Middlesbrough to Whitby four or five times a day, calling at Great Ayton, Kildale, Castleton, Danby, Lealholm, Glaisdale, Egton Bridge, Grosmont, Sleights and Ruswarp. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway links Pickering with Grosmont and Whitby from spring to autumn. Main-line stations at Thirsk, Northallerton, Malton and Scarborough.
Regular buses
The Coastliner (840) runs from Leeds and York through Malton, Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale to Whitby. The X93 links Middlesbrough, Guisborough, Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, Ravenscar and Scarborough; the X4 links Middlesbrough, Saltburn, Staithes and Whitby. The 128 runs Helmsley to Scarborough via Pickering.
Moorsbus
A network of Sunday and bank holiday services from spring to autumn that reaches the villages the regular buses miss: Hutton-le-Hole, Rosedale, Danby, Osmotherley, Sutton Bank and the dales. Timetables change each year; check the Moorsbus website.
Linking them
Train to Grosmont, steam railway to Pickering, Coastliner to Whitby. Or Esk Valley train to Great Ayton, walk over Roseberry Topping and the Cook monument to Kildale, train home.
