Heather season: the moors in purple
For a few weeks in August the largest expanse of heather moorland in England turns purple. Where and when to see it.
Forest trails, moorland climbs, the Cinder Track and the toughest hill in Yorkshire: where to ride.

Dalby Forest has waymarked green and blue trails from the visitor centre, with bike hire on site. Sutton Bank's cycle routes run along the escarpment and through Boltby Forest, also with hire. The Cinder Track between Whitby and Scarborough is traffic-free and flat enough for children.
Dalby's red and black trails are among the best in the north of England, with the World Cup course still rideable. Guisborough Forest, Cropton Forest and the bridleways over Levisham Moor and Spaunton Moor are the natural next step.
The moors are hard riding: short, brutal climbs out of every dale. Rosedale Chimney Bank (33 per cent), Blakey Bank, Blue Bank at Sleights, White Horse Bank at Kilburn and the Sutton Bank hairpins are the classics. The lanes of the Esk Valley and the Vale of Pickering are gentler.
Bike hire at Sutton Bank, Dalby, Whitby and Pickering. The Esk Valley railway carries bikes for free. Carry spares and a map; there are few bike shops on the moor itself.
