Castleton sits where the Esk Valley railway meets the road over Blakey Ridge, a stone village with a green, two pubs and the remains of a Norman castle mound above the river. The road south climbs onto Castleton Rigg with heather on both sides and the Lion Inn nine miles on.
It is a good base for the northern moors and for village-hopping along the Esk Valley line to Danby, Lealholm and Glaisdale.
